Training
with a purpose.
Kokoda was
one of Australias
most significant campaigns of the second world war and the setting for a
challenge taken on by Flinders ONE General manager, Andrew Nairn as he trekked
the 96km trail through rugged mountainous country of rainforest, and thick
jungle. Andrew spent many an early morning, weighted back pack on, tackling the
ever popular Mt Lofty walk from waterfall gully, a number of times over in any
given day to ensure he was prepared. To have a purpose to train provides
motivation, to commit to that purpose by registering for an event, or setting
some goals starts the process. Once commited think about how it feels to
achieve. I know Andrew has great memories, and a story to tell (to come in the
next E-news). Watch in the coming weeks as we offer ideas on simple ways to
challenge yourself, or share your story with us, and we will put it in our
E-news to inspire others.
New Les
Mills programs launched - First quarter workshops have been held and the new
tracks are in. I hear they are hard, but that’s exactly what you need to make
changes. Check the new timetable out and give them all a try.

ACUPUNCTURE AND DRY NEEDLING: THE DIFFERENCE
c/- Wakefield Sports Clinic Physiotherapist Jason Swan.
ACUPUNCTURE
-
The
insertion of fine needles into the skin along meridian lines. These lines
represent organs of the body and have their origins in ancient Chinese medicine
-
The needles
are not inserted very deep, usually a millimetre or so
-
The
technique is generally not painful however the patient may experience a prick sensation
when the needle is introduced; this is more likely to be felt with needles
inserted into the digits
-
The needles
used are single use sterile needles and are disposed of after use
-
The aim of
the treatment is to stimulate the movement or flow of Chi. Chinese medicine believes
that pain or poor function occurs when Chi is blocked
-
Treatment
generally lasts approximately 15 minutes once the needles are introduced
DRY
NEEDLING
-
The
introduction of fine needles into the skin and deeper into the muscles, fascia
and occasionally joints, tendons and bone/tendon junctions
-
Once
inserted the needles are manipulated by the Physio until a sensation is felt
(often an ache
associated with the needle).

|
- Techniques vary from inserting the needle and
leaving it in for 15 minutes or so with occasional manipulation to constant
peppering (pecking) of the needle into the region
-
The
manipulation may occur more than once during the treatment
-
The aim of
the technique is to change the tone within the muscle allowing it to relax
-
The needles
used are single use sterile needles and are disposed of after use
-
Treatment
time can vary depending on the technique used
|
According to The Body Refinery , Acupuncture
and dry needling, while using the same needles, are two very different
treatments. Acupuncture is used for the diagnosis and treatment of pathological
conditions including visceral and systemic dysfunction, while dry needling is
used for the assessment and treatment of myofacial pain syndrome due to
myofacial trigger points. Acupuncture achieves pain relief through the release
of endorphins and creating balance in the body's energy levels. Through the
release of serum cortisol acupuncture can also have an anti-inflammatory
effect. Dry needling achieves pain relief by inactivating trigger points and
thus eliminating nociceptive focus of the muscle, The needles cause localised
haemorrhaging which promotes healing by stimulating collagen and protein
formation.

CAFFEINE - HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
"We
should catch up for a coffee" is something you hear ALL the time.
However caffeine isn't simply limited to coffee. Do you ever wonder how
much you consume.... or more the point, how much you SHOULD consume?
“100 to 200
mg of caffeine (about two espressos) should be enough to keep you alert
throughout the day. Ideally, have smaller doses and spread them out to prevent
rises and dips in your energy levels,” says accredited practising dietitian
Georgina Moore.
|
|
What is it?
Caffeine is the most popular and widely used drug in the world. It is a
substance found in the leaves, seeds or fruit of a number of plant species,
such as coffee and tea plants.
Caffeine is
a stimulant which acts on the central nervous system to speed up the messages
to and from the brain. Its chemical name is 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione
(or 1,3,7-trimethylxanthyine for short).
|
 |
| Here’s how
it stacks up:
An Espresso (includes cappuccinos and lattes)
90 to 200 mg
Caffeine
tablets
100 mg, per tablet
Instant
coffee
60 to 100
mg per cup Cola drink, 35 mg |
Energy
drink
80 to 90 mg, per 250 ml
Guarana
100 mg, per 1 g
Dark-chocolate
bar
40 to 50 mg
per 55 g
Tea (including green)
30 to 100 mg per cup |
What are
the effects of caffeine?
The effects of caffeine differ from person to person, depending on their age,
body size and general health. Regular caffeine users may have different
experiences from people who consume caffeine products only occasionally.
Caffeine
takes 5–30 minutes to circulate in the body after it has been consumed. Its
effects will continue as long as it is in the blood, which is usually around 12
hours.
Relatively
small amounts of caffeine, such as one or two cups of coffee a day, can
stimulate the brain and the central nervous system so that the person feels
more aware and active. This level of consumption usually does not cause any
lasting damage.
Some people
consume drinks containing caffeine so that they can continue working or
studying at night. However, the after-effect is that they will feel tired and
lethargic the next day.
Use of
caffeine can have a number of disturbing physical effects on some people, such
as anxiety, irritability, increased breathing and heart rates, restlessness,
excitability, dizziness, headaches, lack of concentration, gastro-intestinal
pains, dehydration and the need to make frequent trips to the toilet.
